pearl
overview
Not formed by heat and pressure like other gemstones, pearls have the distinction of forming in the soft flesh of mollusks and oysters. Pearls are formed like a reverse jawbreaker as the mollusk or oyster's body will slowly layer on a substance called nacre. Size, shape, and color vary greatly, but the most common are round, white pearls that may have overtones of other colors. They can be naturally formed which is a statistically rare event, or they can be cultured by process of implantation. Due to the rarity of natural formed pearls, they are the more expensive option.
