FEATURED GEM Emerald

Emerald is the bluish green to green variety of beryl, a mineral species that includes aquamarine.

The most valued variety of beryl, emerald was once cherished by Spanish conquistadors, Inca kings, Moguls, and pharaohs. Today, fine gems come from Africa, South America, and Central Asia.

BIRTHSTONE: May BACK TO ALL GEMS
emerald
overview
A very close relative of aquamarine, emeralds are in fact made of the same mineral, which is beryl. They can vary in the intensity of their coloration and you may encounter what is called green beryl which is ultimately just a lighter shade of green than what is considered an emerald. Is it still an emerald or is it truly something different? Not even expert gemologists can seem to agree on the matter. The only thing affected by the varying shade would be the cost of similar sized and shaped stones with l;ghter shades, green beryl, being more affordable than emeralds.
